Xiaomi has finally formalized its partnership with photography specialist Leica. An important step for the Chinese manufacturer that wants to enter a “new era” for smartphone photography. The first result of this collaboration will be visible this summer.
It was in the air for several months, here is now the formalization: Xiaomi and Leica team up. The Chinese manufacturer evokes a “decisive moment” of its history and promises to open a “new era of mobile photography”. Indeed, the announcement is important for Xiaomi, which specifies that the first result of this long-awaited merger will be visible this summer.
In recent years, the smartphone makers have multiplied partnerships with photography specialists like Carl Zeiss, Hasselblad or Leica. These partnerships are an added bonus for manufacturers, while the battle often rages on the photography side. In particular, we saw the appearance of the Zeiss brand on Nokia smartphones, while Hasselblad stood out with a photo module for Motorola. More recently, the manufacturer has decided to approach OnePlus or Oppo.
by his side, leica It has long remained faithful to Huawei with a merger in early 2016. However, the Chinese giant is losing momentum and the situation does not seem to be improving. The famous German brand has finally found another chinese partner in the person of Xiaomi. They both claim that they “Share the same ideas about mobile photography”.
What can Leica bring to Xiaomi?
Xiaomi evokes a “long-term strategic cooperation” with the photography specialist. The alliance will take shape from July with the presentation of a first smartphone “developed jointly by the two companies”. If the identity of the device is not known, it is difficult not to think about the Xiaomi 12ultra which is already emerging as the brand’s future technological showcase. Its predecessor, the 11 Ultra, already stood out in the photos and Leica’s contribution should help Xiaomi take its premium models to a new level. The manufacturer also does not hide its interest in evoking the Leica “leg” to improve the quality of the shots.
The merger should not revolutionize the material approach, but we expect progress in terms of demo algorithms or colorimetry. Leica could also participate in the configuration or treatment of the optics. However, we will have to wait for the arrival of the first models to know the degree of involvement of the German firm.
For Xiaomi there is no doubt that a “photo flagship” is on the way. According to the latest rumors, the Xiaomi 12 Ultra would have an impressive photographic module. As we indicated at the end of March, there remains a question about the number of sensors (from 3 to 5) and the manufacturer’s approach. The latest hall noises are based on a configuration inspired by the current model, with a 50-megapixel main sensor and two 48-megapixel sensors (ultra-wide and telephoto). However, Xiaomi would offer newsstarting with the impressive 50 megapixel Sony IMX800 sensor.

the the smartphone would progress also in the photo thanks to the presence of a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, presented last week by Qualcomm. These advances should help Xiaomi make progress in the high-end segment; but also to repel repeated attacks from Vivo or Oppo.
